Basic Emerging Left
Remember there is always a need to identify the junction and collect information throughout this process.
Mirrors – Check centre and left side mirror
Signal – put your left indicator on
Position – maintain a position in the centre or slightly left of the lane or position in the left lane. If you need to change lanes or position then check it is safe before moving over
Speed and Gear – slow down gently and progressively continuing to slow down until you are sure it is safe to turn. Option 1: slow below 20mph and go into 2nd gear, continue to slow and be prepared to change into 1st gear.
Option 2: slow down below 10mph and go into 1st gear, cover the brake and find the biting point to control the car in a slow and steady creep.
Look – check again for cyclists (is there a cycle lane across the end of the road?) and ensure no pedestrians are crossing the road. Look down the road you are driving into (look particularly for meeting traffic situations or vulnerable road users and to assess the speed and flow of the traffic)
Assess – make judgements about the speed and position of other road users (and their intended speed and position) in relation to your speed and position.
Decide – choose whether you will go, slow down further or stop and wait
Act – do what you decided to do well and promptly, and if necessary then repeat the looking, assessing, deciding and acting until you can safely go.
Once you have completed the turn, check the road ahead and your mirrors so that you can decide what your next action will be (often this will be gaining speed to fit in with road and traffic conditions).
